How to keep extra large starter fish alive as long as you can?
Im gonna go to walmart and get extra large starter fish for fishing.how can i keep them alive as long as possible.I already have two small fish in the tank.Also the tank is 2Ft long 1 Ft wide and 15 inches high how many ex large starter fish can fit in there
If by starter fish you mean "feeder goldfish" I would first caution you against using them as bait unless you are living in an area to which they are native just in case they get free (non-native fish breeding in the wild are a big problem in many parts of the world)
now to how to keep them alive as long as possible:
1. If they are gold fish first buy healthy ones (no damaged fins, no infections, they should be lively and eat well) which is hard if they are feeders because stores dont make any effort to care for them as they are considered "fish food"
2.Clean conditioned water (use a de-chlorinator)
3.lots or aeration (an air pump and an air stone will do the trick)
4. keep them cool, cold water holds a lot more oxygen and also slows down the fish system so they eat less and poop less thus keeping the water clean.
a neat trick that take care of all the above (if you have a sink or overflow area is to allow a very slow(a drip per second) drip of cold tap water into the tank this will keep the water cool and also clean as within a few hours half the water in the tank would have been replaced with fresh tap water (aeration will help to release the chlorine from the water and the fish will adapt as the change will happen very slowly)
I have actually kept feeders in a oxygen filled bag in my fridge for3 days and never lost one but i wouldn't recommend this unless you know what you are doing and you are single.
btw: feed them very little as this will pollute the water
