The epitaph on my tombstone read: animal handler hired as ambassador Joan Embery of the San Diego Zoo and put it on the road to fame.
I spent 50 years in a PR of colors and a career in journalism. But my nomination for the post of new zoo and putting Joan on "The Tonight Show" seems to be what most people remember.
And why not? Joan nearly 100 appearances with Johnny Carson became a familiar face to millions of Americans. Nestled by snakes and loved by the leopard, which was a natural success to bring fun, excitement and drama of wild animals in the homes of viewers.
His rise to fame began with his first booking on "The Tonight Show" in 1970 with the young elephant was taught to paint. When the artist, Carol, doubted to perform, he turned with a brush in the trunk, slide in the crotch of Johnny, who convulsed the audience and Ed McMahon. Joan, 21, became a "regular" in the next four decades, providing millions of dollars in advertising in our park so financially strapped.
(Little Carol then painted as poster board for the 12 million viewers that night - and gained notoriety as our artistic elephant for years, gaining tons of publicity!)
When word got Juana's fame, she appeared on network programs with residents of the zoo and not hundreds of television and radio interviews. He then traveled Africa, England, Australia and elsewhere, spreading messages of wildlife conservation, while promoting our world-famous attraction Desk.
Indeed, Joan became an ambassador of our zoo second. I put my foot in the selection of the first. And, of course, never There was a need for a third. Joan made it known and promote the San Diego Zoo in a race for the next 35 years until his recent retirement.
In the late '60s, the zoo attendance experienced a steady decline (due in part to competition from the new SeaWorld marine park). Our Department of Foreign Public was given the task of devising ways to attract more visitors to our growing menagerie.
Accordingly, as head of advertising the zoo since '65, I have proposed the selection and training of a young girl to serve as ambassador for the zoo. After due consideration, Board of Trustees and the zoo director approved a small budget for the trial of one year.
My idea had actually arisen from a previous visit to our children by a young ambassador Zoo, Disneyland wanderer. If it was good enough for Walt's creative genius, I remember thinking, why does not someone similar for us?
Several hundred girls responded to our first call of a young woman photogenic, well spoken, with a love of wildlife. The chosen would give talks, take VIPS in zoo tours and make presentations at events like the 200th anniversary of the nearby town.
Long story short, I got the first time to choose the wrong candidate, one that was not good at handling animals, nervous about public speaking and was not sure the city.
At the end his year, we returned to the drawing board. I revisited our resume file and put the word in public again at the soft answer. One day, he said that a candidate worked in our noses at the Zoo for Children - Joan Embery.
The zoo had hired college students Joan, 18, to work with baby animals. So with several years experience under his belt in 1969, had managed to know and admire your devotion to our wildlife orphans and work.
I swore that Joan could talk to animals and vice versa. I knew she could easily detect a pouting insulted elephant. In fact, one of his friends really came out elephant foot travel by Joan as I ran.
Several times, the always cheerful Miss Embery had invited me to come in an animal enclosure with her. She will offer attractions for the information - as the reason only female elephants zoos is that bulls are very dangerous when in musth during mating season. She told me that their hormones rage to the extent that it can lift concrete, or even try to kill their guards.
And I remember once watching in amazement as our future ambassador "He reached into the mouth of an elephant petting a bulging tongue pink. "It's a salute to them - like shaking hands," he said as he watched, jaw agape. "Go ahead - Try it!" she urged. But I was too chicken, deciding I did not want to be the environment.
For the second round, I called Joan in the zoo next ambassador. And in the following years, I saw it with pride in the way he handled himself in public and media appearances. His true love and devotion to wildlife, came to the hearing, giving it a reputation that was not looking, while the zoo and wildlife causes prospered.
Many fans today still remember the Carson "Tonight Show "segment when Joan let little Johnny to hold a marmoset monkey, which rose and relieved itself on the top of the head of the famous host. From expression Johnny is caught in reruns of "The Best of Carson."
It exceeded even the night, when we "Dudley Duplex", a baby two-headed snake king, NBC. She slid up his shirt sleeve to hide Johnny Carson, and could not leave. Johnny kept calling his sleeve: "Come out, boys - out now! "
Selection of wildlife-loving teen-ager as a Zoo Ambassador ranks right in retrospect as the most intelligent (or more fortunate that move the story). Besides marrying my wife of 60 years!
